Leeds United v Sheffield Wednesday betting tips: Solomon strikes as Whites move clear of third

Daniel Farke manager of Leeds United

There’s a Yorkshire derby to savour at Elland Road this week, with fascinating storylines both on and off the pitch as Leeds United play host to Sheffield Wednesday.

The early kick-off will see Owls fans protest against the club owner's antics, while Leeds fans will just hope to punish Burnley and Sunderland's Friday night slip-up.

There’s uncertainty between the sticks at Leeds, while the absence of Pascal Struijk may also help the visitors cause.

Under-fire goalkeeper Illan Meslier made crucial saves in both of those season’s meetings to help preserve Leeds’ clean sheet but it remains to be seen if he’ll keep his place ahead of Karl Darlow.

The Owls have yet to score against Leeds since the Whites returned to the Championship last season but they’ll be hopeful of an upset on Sunday.

Daniel Farke’s side won both meetings at Hillsborough by a comfortable margin of two goals to zip, while the only meeting at Elland Road finished 0-0.

Meanwhile, at Hillsborough, Dejphon Chansiri was the centre of attention again this week, throwing manager Danny Rohl under the bus and sharing with fans he had requested to speak to Southampton about the vacant managerial position.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the much-maligned Thai owner suggested at the fans' forum Shea Charles would be there until the end of the season, only for Southampton to have recalled him by the end of the bizarre six-hour event.

Back to matters only the pitch, it’s bound to harm the Owl’s chances of pinching a result. Charles has been in superb form this season and it’s clear Barry Bannan needs legs alongside him.

Leeds’ dynamic midfield should be able to win that particular battle, even if Ethan Ampadu drops into defence and Joe Rothwell comes in.

The bigger issue may come further forward, as United will be without the services of Joel Piroe and Patrick Bamford, leaving Mateo Joseph as the only out-and-out striker available.

Our numbers suggest the visitors will struggle to score and, as is often the case, a 2-0 home win is the most likely scoreline.

However, we’re mindful that early kick-offs rarely catch fire, and the visitors will do their best to slow the game down and disrupt Leeds’ rhythm.

Rather than risk backing Leeds in the handicap market, we’ll allow the suggested 2-0 scoreline to guide us towards a goals-bet and back under 2.5 goals.

We’ll also embrace the potential for this to get physical. That’s a prerequisite for disrupting the flow, but Leeds are no wallflower themselves. The line is set at 3.5, which feels low.

Last but not least, we’ll embrace Manor Solomon’s emergence as a key player for Daniel Farke. He now seems to be his go-to winger with his performances improving each week.

Despite that, Bet365 lists Joel Piroe (injured), Willy Gnonto (sub), and Largie Ramazani (sub) as more likely goal contributors. The Israeli has assisted in his last two appearances.
