  • Lazio President Blames Manchester United Over Deadline Day Handling Of Mason Greenwood Transfer

Lazio president blames Manchester United over deadline day handling of Mason Greenwood transfer

Mason Greenwood is preparing for a return to competitive football after agreeing a deadline day loan move to La Liga side Getafe.

The deal has angered Lazio president Claudio Lotito who insists that Manchester United delayed a potential move to the Serie A club.

According to reports, there was a delay in processing the required documents which meant that the necessary paperwork was not submitted before the 7pm deadline in Italy.

This allowed Getafe to swoop in and seal a season-long loan for the 21-year-old forward.

"I tried until the last minute,” Lotito told La Lazio Siamo Noi on Friday evening.

“They didn’t countersign in time. He wanted to come to Lazio."

Greenwood has been training with a personal trainer and hasn’t played a competitive match since January 2022.

That month, the England international was charged with attempted rape, domestic violence and controlling behaviour.

Last February, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges following the withdrawal of witnesses.

Manchester United conducted their own six-month investigation into the situation, though ultimately a decision was made to send the forward out on loan.

Greenwood is eligible to make his Getafe debut against Osasuna – their first match after the international break.

Getafe kicked off their season with a goalless draw against Barcelona. Since then, the club lost 3-0 away in Girona before beating Alaves 1-0 at home.
