Hull City vice-chairman: Middlesbrough in the mix for Newcastle United goalkeeper

Hull City are still in the driving seat to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, but vice-chairman Tan Kesler has conceded that Middlesbrough are also in the mix.

The Magpies are looking to offload some of their fringe players ahead of a summer spending spree, with Champions League football returning to St James' Park being a huge draw for big-name players. Darlow is one of them as he is likely to be third-choice keeper at best next season.

Meanwhile, Boro have highlighted Darlow as a potential replacement for Zack Steffen, whose loan spell from Manchester City concluded at the end of last season. It is reported that Boro have had talks with the goalkeeper and his representatives.

However, Darlow impressed at Hull City during the second half of last season, making 12 appearances for the Tigers.
Kesler has spoken to both Newcastle and Darlow about the 32-year-old's future and accepts that wages may be an issue. Despite this, he is confident that he'll move to the MKM Stadium.

Kesler told Hull Live: "I've been speaking with Newcastle and Karl as well. Karl's intention is to come and stay with us, but it's not a secret that Middlesbrough and other clubs are interested in signing him.

"That's due to his personality, his achievements in the past and because of that, Newcastle have given him a very good contract which is something above the Championship's affordability.

"We're trying to be creative and find ways to bring him on board. Neither Middlesbrough nor any other club without parachute payments can afford his full wages.

"We're all in the mix, we would like to have him and we have spoken to him and he would like to come. Ideally, we would like to generate a creative solution both for Newcastle and us, but we're in discussions at the moment.

"At the moment, I can't tell you he is coming or he's not coming - there are other clubs interested in him.

"If he really wants to come like he did last season, understand what we are and be a part of it, I think he will use his judgement to make a call and be a part of us.

"If he doesn't, we have to find another goalkeeper that can complement Matt Ingram who is also a number one goalkeeper for us."

Meanwhile, the Northern Echo is reporting that Darlow wants his situation to be sorted in two weeks' time, ahead of pre-season training.
