Just when you thought the football season was over, the international break has come into view – starting with Germany against Portugal in the UEFA Nations League semi-final (Wed, 2000 BST).

Just a few days ago, the Allianz Arena in Munich appeared to have closed the curtain on the season with the conclusion of the Champions League. Unfortunately for the holiday-starved players, their break didn’t last long.

On Wednesday, the Allianz Arena will once again be the centre of attention as the famous ground hosts the first UEFA Nations League semi-final.

Germany are making their first ever appearance in the final stage of this competition and will be regarded as slight favourites courtesy of home advantage.

Die Mannschaft have suffered just one home loss in 12 matches since late 2023 and Julian Nagelsmann’s men will undoubtedly fancy their chances.

Portugal have more experience in this competition, going all the way in the inaugural edition of the Nations League back in 2018/19.

While Portugal remain a force to be reckoned with, there is a growing feeling of uncertainty around them.

Firstly, the rumour mill has linked Jose Mourinho with the job – something that could unsettle current boss Roberto Martinez.

Secondly, the future of Cristiano Ronaldo is also a big question mark. The 40-year-old is at the centre of a summer transfer saga, with numerous clubs around the world vying for his signature. When it comes to his international career, the end is undoubtedly just around the corner.

UEFA Nations League offers Ronaldo the chance to win his third piece of international silverware in what could be his final tournament with the national side.

For Germany, this is their big opportunity to get their hands on a trophy for the first time since winning the FIFA Confederations Cup back in 2017.

Germany overcame Italy in the quarter-final, winning the two-legged tie 5-4. The victors bagged a 2-1 win away from home before drawing 3-3 in Dortmund.

Scoring goals has not been a problem for Nagelsmann’s men, with the side scoring 13 times across their last four matches.

You could say the same about Portugal. Martinez has seen his side score 11 goals in four matches – including five against Denmark in the second leg of their quarter-final.

With both teams scoring goals for fun, we’re backing over 3.5 goals in this fixture. While we’re at it, we are also backing both sides to score.

In terms of specific players, we’re backing Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz to have at least one shot on target. The 22-year-old boasts three goal contributions in his last three matches for his club.

Ruben Dias to make at least one tackle is our final bet builder addition. The Man City man is expected to have a busy night away in Munich.
