Former Liverpool goalkeeper set to make Villarreal comeback after 17 years away

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is expected to rejoin La Liga outfit Villarreal, almost two decades on since leaving the Spanish club.

Reina spent the last two seasons at Lazio, where he made 54 appearances across all competitions.

The 39-year-old left the Serie A club following the expiry of his contract, and is now targeting a return to his former employers Villarreal, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Reina left The Yellow Submarine in 2005 to link-up with then-European Champions Liverpool, where he went on to make 396 appearances across all competitions.

The Spaniard helped the Reds to FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Super Cup triumphs, and also reached the Champions League final in 2007.
During his time at Anfield, Reina also won three successive Premier League Golden Gloves in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
After leaving the club, the goalkeeper then enjoyed an impressive run at Napoli which saw him lift the 2013/14 Coppa Italia.
Spells in AC Milan and Aston Villa followed before the keeper once again settled at Lazio.

Reina featured in less than half of all the league games last season and is expected to be replaced at the club by Luis Maximiano, who Lazio hope to sign from Granada.
