England run riot to dump Wales out of World Cup

Two goals from Marcus Rashford and a Phil Foden strike helped England cruise to a 3-0 win over Wales to top Group B and qualify for the round of 16 at the World Cup.

The defeat, added to USA's 1-0 win over Iran, leaves Wales at the bottom of the group and out of the tournament.

England's reward is a last-16 meeting with Senegal on Sunday, by which point Robert Page's side will have long since left Qatar after their first appearance on the world stage in 64 years ended in frustration.

England were on top for the majority of the first half but unable to make a breakthrough, with Rashford having the best chances to open the scoring. He spurned a one-on-one which he fired at Wales keeper Danny Ward and blasted an overhead kick high and wide.
England broke the deadlock in style just five minutes into the second half, Foden was fouled by Joe Rodon and Rashford fired in the resulting free-kick over Ward.
The lead was doubled just moments later, Foden this time the scorer as he tucked away Kane's cross after Rashford had won the ball off Ben Davies on the edge of the Wales box.

Rashford would get his second of the game in the 68th minute, collecting a pass from substitute Kalvin Phillips and firing a shot through the legs of Ward.

The Manchester United forward came close to his hat-trick soon after but this time Ward was equal to his low effort.
The 25-year-old, making his first England start since June 2021, left to a standing ovation when he was substituted late on.
England's third goal against Wales was their 100th in World Cup finals tournaments. They are now the seventh team to reach three figures, headed by Brazil with 231, and the second at this year's tournament after Spain.
