Charlton appoint Nathan Jones as their new manager

Former Southampton and Luton boss Nathan Jones has been appointed the new manager of League One Charlton.

Jones, who has signed a long-term contract, takes over from Michael Appleton, who was sacked last month after a run of 10 matches without a win in League One.

Jones, who enjoyed two successful spells at Luton, either side of a 10-month stint with Stoke, was sacked as Southampton boss last February after only three months in charge, with the club bottom of the Premier League table.

He arrives at the Valley with Charlton three points above the drop zone. They were beaten 1-0 by Derby on Saturday, extending their winless league run to 12 games.

Jones, who coached the Charlton Under-21s in the 2012/13 season, told the club website: “I am extremely excited by the challenge in front of me at Charlton.

“It is a club that I have fond memories of from my time here and I want to play my part in moving the club forward.

“I have been approached by a number of clubs to get back into management, but I have been waiting for the right opportunity.

“From my conversations with the board and given the long-term nature of the contract, I can see there is a real appetite to build something here which I am really looking forward to being a part of.”

Jones’ first game in charge will be against Reading on Saturday.
