Bundesliga: Freiburg fail to keep pressure on Bayern Munich after remarkable Wolfsburg collapse

Freiburg’s hopes of mounting a serious title challenge hit a major road bump as Christian Streich’s men were thrashed 6-0 by Wolfsburg.

With league leaders Bayern Munich enduring a 1-1 draw in Leipzig on Friday night, Freiburg had the chance to close the gap at the top of the table to two points with victory over Wolfsburg.

Streich's side emerged as unlikely title contenders before the World Cup break following a stellar run of results.
The Breisgau Brazilians picked up a club-record 30 points from their opening 15 games in the Bundesliga and also boasted the second-best defence in the competition having conceded just 17 goals before Saturday's game.

However, Freiburg collapsed in their first competitive game of the year, with Wolfsburg running out comfortable 6-0 winners.

Patrick Wimmer opened the scoring in the second minute, while a double from Jonas Wind saw the hosts take a 3-0 lead at the break.
Yannick Gerhardt scored early in the second-half, before Ridle Baku and Luca Waldschmidt completed the rout.
Niko Kovac's side have now won five straight games in the Bundesliga and find themselves sixth - just four points adrift of Champions League places.
Wolfsburg will be looking to continue their run against Hertha Berlin on Tuesday.
Freiburg, on the other hand, have dropped to fourth and trail leaders Bayern Munich by five points.
Streich's men host second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.
