Bournemouth boss coy on future despite heading for Premier League points record

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola insists his focus is on a strong finish to the season and not holding talks with Cherries owner Bill Foley about the club’s future.

American billionaire Foley is currently in the UK, with Bournemouth currently riding the crest of a wave and in line to record their highest Premier League points tally.

But Iraola insists his attention is on Saturday’s trip to Luton, saying: “I’m sure the club is talking to him (Foley) and Simon (Francis, technical director) is talking about next season and preparing everything.

“But me as a coach, I’m really focused on today and tomorrow, the Luton game, the next game.

“Sometimes you have to talk about other things but I don’t like to talk too much about the future. Our job is to go day by day, this is sport.

“It’s good that (Foley) has been here the last two games and we won.

“I think he was also thinking of travelling to Luton. I don’t know if he will, but it seems like he’s enjoying it here.”

Four wins and a draw from five games have lifted Bournemouth to within touching distance of the top 10 and on to 41 points with eight games to play.

Bournemouth’s best Premier League points return is 46 under Eddie Howe in the 2016-17 season.

Argentina defender Marcos Senesi could return at Kenilworth Road after missing four games with a hamstring injury, but the Cherries’ camp has been hit by a sickness bug this week.

Iraola said: “This week is going to be difficult. We have some cases of I don’t want to say ‘illness’, but they are not probably feeling 100 per cent.

“It is true we have some players who are let’s say in doubtful conditions to perform if the game was today.

“Luckily for us, we still have two days and we hope they can recover and help us.

“The key for me is if they have a temperature or not. If you have a temperature, probably you will be two or three days with these symptoms and it is difficult to play football with a temperature.

“It is a matter of different situations. But we still have two days and I hope we don’t miss more players.”
