Birmingham v Newcastle: Predictions, tips and bet builder as Blues tackle high-flying Magpies

Eddie Howe August 9, 2024

Three days on from securing a spot at Wembley in the EFL Cup, Newcastle will be looking to make a dent in the FA Cup – starting with a fourth-round clash in Birmingham (1745 GMT).

Eddie Howe’s men made Arsenal look like schoolboys on Wednesday as goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon set up a tasty Carabao Cup final with Liverpool.

Newcastle enter Saturday’s game having won 11 of their last 13 games and will be huge favourites for their trip to Birmingham.

However, the Blues are unlikely to be intimidated despite living in the deep and murky world of League One.

Chris Davies has led his men to an 18-match unbeaten run across all competitions – a run which will undoubtedly fill the hosts full of confidence ahead of their high-profile clash with the Magpies.

Here, we take a closer look at Saturday’s cup clash and pick out some of the best bets along the way.

Good luck and please gamble responsibly.

Newcastle to win and both teams to score

Man City, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool – Newcastle’s next three games certainly don’t look easy.

Looking at those encounters, don’t be surprised if Howe rotates his squad and saves his big guns for Premier League action.

No matter how many players are rested by the Magpies, the visitors will remain favourites against a team sitting two divisions below.

However, Birmingham are in good form and we expect them to go down fighting. With that in mind, Newcastle to win and both teams to score is the way to go.

Newcastle to win the first half

Newcastle have won the first half in four of their last five matches across all competitions – including the 2-0 win over Arsenal last time out.

With the Magpies expected to dictate proceedings on Saturday, we’re backing them to continue their first-half winning trend.

Over 2.5 goals

Five of Newcastle’s last six games have seen over 2.5 goals scored – the sole exception being their recent victory over Arsenal.

Three of the last five head-to-head meetings have also seen the bet land, although the last encounter took place eight years ago.

Birmingham most bookings

Statistically, the team that tends to do most of the defending comes out with the most bookings – in this case it should be Birmingham.
