Benni McCarthy to extend Manchester United stay - reports

Benni McCarthy Manchester United

Benni McCarthy is reportedly set to remain with Manchester United heading into the new Premier League season.

Question marks had been raised over McCarthy's future with the Red Devils with his current contract coming to an end this month.

His tenure was tied to that of Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag, who was seemingly on his way out of Old Trafford after a poor season.

But the Dutchman is now set to enter new contract negotiations, and is said to have requested a contract extension for the South African striker coach.

Ten Hag's current deal expires at the end of next season, but he has an option to extend by a further year.

McCarthy joined United with Ten Hag in 2022 and was well received by the club. He was credited with improving the form of England striker Marcus Rashford.

McCarthy has also talked up his desire to return to a head coach role, but it is unlikely he will turn down the chance to remain with United for now.

The former Cape Town City and AmaZulu boss recently said he had learnt a lot working with Ten Hag.

He explained on the Daily Express: "I've learned a lot in my two years working at Man United, working with Erik - he's one of the smartest managers I've seen."
