Thomas Müller stands together with Goofy and Mickey Mouse as Bayern Munich train for the Club World Cup

The Club World Cup will take a bizarre turn this Sunday as global juggernauts Bayern Munich face New Zealand’s Auckland City in one of the biggest mismatches in competitive club football history.

There are occasions, especially in domestic cup competitions, when an elite club goes head-to-head with a team way below their paygrade. Sunday’s fixture, however, goes well beyond that.

In a competition designed to pip the world’s best clubs against each other, the sixth richest club on earth will take on a side made up of amateur players who spend their days working as barbers, storemen, tool makers, sales representatives and even real estate agents.

Auckland City, not to be confused with former A-League Premiership winners Auckland FC, normally compete in front of around 800 to 1,000 fans and tend to pay players around $90 for expenses.

Looking at the situation from the outside, you might wonder how a team of that size qualified for a tournament which is full of footballing giants. But don’t be fooled, Auckland City earned their place on merit.

The New Zealand club are 13-time Oceania Champions League winners, with 12 of those titles coming in the last 15 years. Considering FIFA want teams from every confederation to take part in their brand-new 32-team tournament, Auckland City were without doubt the best choice from Oceania.

While some of the members of Auckland’s squad had to take unpaid leave in order to attend the tournament, their efforts are set to be rewarded thanks to the vast amount of participation payments on the table.

Auckland will take home well over $3m for just turning up, which is not bad going for a little amateur side from the other side of the world.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t Auckland’s first appearance at the Club World Cup. Thanks to their continental exploits, the club have competed in the event 12 times, but they simply never got far enough to face a real footballing giant.

Sunday will mark the biggest test in the club’s 21-year history as they prepare to take on Bayern Munich in front of over 20,000 fans at Cincinnati’s TQL Stadium.

Bayern Munich v Auckland City best bets

    HT/FT Bayern Munich/Bayern Munich – 1/5

    Over 4.5 goals – 7/10

Bayern Munich to win to nil – 3/10

Thomas Muller to score anytime – 1/1

Good luck and please gamble responsibly.

(All odds are correct at time of article publication)

Auckland City head into Sunday’s fixture priced at 250/1 to win. As a comparison, Taylor Swift is priced 200/1 to be the next US President, while Count Binface is the same price to become the next London Mayor.

With the way things are going, your money is probably a lot safer with the American songstress or the Bin-meister himself. But jokes aside, those numbers are there just to illustrate the gulf between both clubs.

Bearing all that in mind, we are kicking off our acca with Bayern Munich in the half time/full time market. Over 4.5 goals is our second addition, while Bayern to win to nil is our third tip.

In terms of specific player bets, we are putting our chips on Thomas Muller to get on the scoresheet. With tougher tests to come later, Vincent Kompany is unlikely to field his best side just yet. Muller’s best years are behind him, but this is the perfect kind of fixture to give him game time.
