2023 Mosconi Cup: Everything you need to know ahead of the 30th Anniversary event

Mosconi Cup Team Europe

The biggest event in pool returns for the 30th edition as the 10 best players from America and Europe go head-to-head in the historic Mosconi Cup.

Some call it the Ryder Cup of pool. Others say it’s the Weber Cup of pool. We disagree. The Mosconi Cup is bigger than both of those put together… well, at least that’s what I think.

Of all sporting events in the world, there is nothing quite like the magic of continental nineball drama.

Here is everything you need to know about the event ahead of it’s 30th Anniversary.

What is the Mosconi Cup?

Since 1994, the best pool players from the United States and Europe have gone head-to-head.

The format has changed over the years, though as things stand each team consists of five players and a captain.

The two teams compete in singles, doubles and teams matches, with the first side to win 11 games claiming the trophy.

Why is it called the Mosconi Cup?

The tournament is named after legendary American pool player Willie Mosconi.

Between 1941 and 1957, Mr Pocket Billiards claimed the World Straight Pool title 19 times. Mosconi passed away in 1993 at the age of 80.

Who has won the most Mosconi Cups?

Europe currently leads the overall tally 15-13 despite the Americans winning 10 of the first 12 events.

The Europeans have dominated proceedings over the last couple of decades. However, the biggest margin of victory still stands with the Americans who won 12-1 back in 2001.

Who are the defending Mosconi Cup champions?

Europe head into the 2023 Mosconi Cup having lifted the trophy for the last three years.

Germany’s Joshua Filler was the MVP in 2022 as he helped his side to an 11-7 victory in Las Vegas.

Where is the 2023 Mosconi Cup?

The latest edition of the Mosconi Cup will take place at Alexandra Palace in London.

The last Mosconi Cup to be held at this venue was back in 2021 which saw Team Europe power to a dramatic 11-6 victory.

The Alexandra Palace is also synonymous with the PDC World Darts Championship which will be held just a week after the Mosconi Cup.

Who is playing for Team Europe?

This year, the Europeans will be captained by Ralph Eckert.

His team consists of David Alcaide, Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz, Jayson Shaw, Albin Ouschan and Joshua Filler.

Who is playing for Team USA?

Jeremy Jones will once again captain the American team.

His squad is made up of Skyler Woodward, Fedor Gorst, Shane Van Boening, Tyler Styer and Shane Wolford.

What’s the prize money in the 2023 Mosconi Cup?

The total prize fund for the 2023 event is $375,000.

Each player on the winning team will claim a cool $40,000 while the losers will take home $20,000. There are also bonuses on the line.

When does the 2023 Mosconi Cup start?

The four-day event gets underway on Wednesday, December 6 and will culminate on Saturday, December 9.
