Stoffel Vandoorne will get behind the wheel of the Aston Martin AMR23 at Spa

Stoffel Vandoorne of Aston Martin 16 Jul 2023
Reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne will fire up the Aston Martin AMR23 for the first time at Spa.
Stoffel Vandoorne is set to make his debut in the Aston Martin AMR23 during the upcoming Pirelli Formula 1 tyre test at Spa.
As the Aston reserve driver, Vandoorne will share driving duties with Lance Stroll, while McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will also have their chances on the track.
This will mark Vandoorne's first time driving a current F1 car since his stint with Mercedes in the Abu Dhabi test back in December 2020.
Although the focus of the Spa test is on Pirelli's tyre evaluation, it presents a valuable opportunity for Vandoorne to experience the 2023 car, aiding in the correlation of his simulator work for Aston Martin.
Additionally, it will be beneficial should he need to step in for Stroll or Fernando Alonso during the rest of the season.
Vandoorne shares the reserve role at Aston with Felipe Drugovich, who had his own chance to test the AMR23 at the Bahrain test earlier this year.
While Drugovich has been accumulating further mileage in private testing, Vandoorne continues to be available as a reserve driver for McLaren as well.
The Spa test not only gives Vandoorne an understanding of 2023 downforce levels but also familiarises him with the Mercedes power unit shared by both the AMR23 and the MCL60.
Having made his F1 debut with McLaren in 2016 and subsequently spending two full seasons with the team, Vandoorne faced ups and downs before finding success in Formula E. He won the 2021-22 championship for Mercedes in Formula E and has been serving as their F1 reserve.
