Red Bull admit 2024 F1 car didn't meet their benchmarks

Red Bull F1

Red Bull have conceded that their 2024 Formula 1 car didn't quite hit the mark, having made significant changes to their RB20 in hopes of maintaining their competitive edge.

Despite their impressive 2023 season, where they won all but one race, the RB20 did not meet all of their anticipated benchmarks this year.

The season started favourably, with Red Bull achieving three 1-2 finishes in the first four races.

However, from May onwards, rival teams such as McLaren and Mercedes began to close the gap, making the championship race much tighter.

Red Bull had anticipated that competition would intensify as the season progressed, but the rapid convergence of car designs has made for a much more challenging battle.

In an interview with Motorsport.com, technical director Pierre Wache revealed that the 2024 Red Bull fell short of their targets, saying: "We improved compared to last year, without doubt, but we didn't deliver what we expected in some areas.

"Especially in the high-speed corners we expected a little bit more than what we have. Without thinking about the competitiveness of the car, so just based on our own references, we expected a little bit more with our tools.

"In medium-speed and low-speed we improved quite a lot compared to last year. We were a little bit weaker in the high-speed corners compared to last year relative to the competition.

"In kerb riding we are clearly weak, but we were already last year. I think we didn't make the improvement we expected in that aspect."
