A shocking explosion at the Nurburgring Grand Prix paddock in Hungary has led to multiple injuries and an urgent airlift to hospitals.
The incident unfolded during this weekends test and setup sessions for the fourth round of the Nurburgring Endurance Series, held on a weekend that was otherwise focused on preparations and practice.
The explosion, which occurred shortly after 18h00 on Friday, has been attributed to a pressure cylinder according to initial reports from the circuit.
The blast was severe enough to prompt immediate action from emergency services on-site. The Nurburgring Medical Centre quickly provided initial care before the injured were transferred by helicopter to nearby hospitals.
In a statement released via social media, Nurburgring officials described the situation: "During the test and setup runs ahead of the fourth round of the Nurburgring Endurance Series (NLS), an explosion occurred shortly after 6 PM behind a pit in the Grand Prix paddock area.
"Preliminary findings suggest that the explosion was caused by a pressure cylinder. Extensive emergency personnel on site immediately initiated appropriate first measures and secured the accident scene.
"The setup run was immediately interrupted. Initial reports indicate that there are several injured individuals who, after receiving immediate care at the Nurburgring Medical Centre, were transported by rescue helicopter to nearby hospitals.
"The police are investigating the scene, as is customary in such situations. Further information will follow."
This incident occurred in a season already marked by notable events, including McLaren driver Oscar Piastri‘s debut Formula 1 victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix on 21 July.
The F1 season is currently on its summer break and is set to resume on Friday, 23 August.
