F2 star Frederik Vesti earns promotion to Mercedes F1 reserve role

Frederik Vesti, Formula 2 runner-up, has been appointed as one of the reserve drivers for the Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team for the 2024 season.

The Danish driver's journey with Mercedes began in January 2021 when he joined as a junior driver.

Progressing from simulator work in 2022 to his first F1 car outing at the post-season young driver test later that year, he showcased his potential.

In 2023, Vesti continued simulator duties and earned free practice opportunities at select Grands Prix.

Last month, Vesti secured a race programme in the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) with Cool Racing, debuting in sportscar racing at the Barcelona Four Hours race in April.

However, potential schedule clashes between ELMS and F1 may limit his availability as a reserve driver for certain Grands Prix, shared with ex-F1 driver Mick Schumacher.

Vesti's promotion to the reserve driver role follows successful seasons in junior single-seaters, including fourth place in the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship and an impressive 2023 F2 campaign with six wins and a title fight.

His appointment underscores Mercedes' confidence in his talent and potential contribution to the team.
