Eddie Irvine predicts Lewis Hamilton's title quest with Mercedes is over

As the Formula 1 community anticipates the 2024 season, former F1 driver Eddie Irvine provides a sobering assessment of Lewis Hamilton's chances to secure an eighth championship with Mercedes.

F1 pundit Irvine, known for his sharp insights, contends that the era of Hamilton and Mercedes' dominance has come to a close.

Hamilton, a seven-time Drivers' Champion, six times with the Silver Arrows, finds himself in a race win drought since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Despite the team's historic eight consecutive Constructors' Championships and 120 wins between 2014 and 2021, Mercedes struggled in the post-2021 era due to changes in regulations and challenges with their car design.

Irvine points out that replicating their prior success will be a formidable task, particularly with Max Verstappen's stellar performance behind the wheel of the Red Bull claiming three world championships in a row.

In an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Irvine states, "The era of the triumphs of Hamilton and Mercedes is now over, but Lewis is still a very good driver, very focused on objectives and eager to obtain results.

"Also, the comparison with Verstappen is very tough because Max is younger, has a bit more speed and enormous belief in his abilities."

Mercedes, once an indomitable force, endured a winless 2023 season. Irvine suggests that Hamilton's future in F1 hinges on Mercedes' competitiveness in 2024. "Hamilton's prospects will depend on how competitive Mercedes will be in 2024," he explains. Acknowledging Hamilton's experience and ability to seize opportunities, Irvine doubts the realization of the dream for an eighth title.

The motorsport world eagerly awaits the Bahrain International Circuit's asphalt to feel the scorching rubber of F1 cars during the pre-season testing from February 23 to 25. It marks the beginning of a new chapter, one where teams and drivers strive to adapt to the evolving dynamics of Formula 1.

For Hamilton and Mercedes, the 2024 season promises to be a critical juncture, with challenges and uncertainties awaiting the former champions on their quest for success.
