Former F1 champion Damon Hill has commended Lewis Hamilton for his instrumental role in Mercedes' recent advancements, following their impressive double podium finish at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Damon Hill, the 1996 F1 World Champion, lauded Lewis Hamilton for his instrumental role in Mercedes' recent advancement following their outstanding double podium finish at the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix.
After a strenuous start to the season, the Silver Arrows experienced a marked improvement at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with Hamilton and George Russell securing second and third place, respectively.
The team had implemented an upgrade package for the W14, prompting Toto Wolff, the team principal, to commend the decision to alter the concept direction based on the outcome.
Hill expressed optimism about Mercedes' potential achievements, stating, "Mercedes demonstrated in the race that they have surpassed the threat posed by Aston Martin and Ferrari on a circuit that truly tests the car's tyre management, aerodynamic balance, and performance," as he shared on the Sky Sports F1 Podcast.
"It has shown its inherent potential. Each circuit is unique, but Barcelona is one of those venues that showcases sheer performance, aerodynamic package, and balance, which is why the Red Bulls were dominant, especially Max [Verstappen]."
"So, I believe there are encouraging signs for Mercedes, without a doubt."
Hamilton, in a positive assessment of the car following the race in Barcelona, reinforced Hill's sentiments. Hill regarded this as an additional positive aspect, considering that the seven-time World Champion had previously expressed concerns about the concept earlier in the year.
"Perhaps this [result in Spain] has unlocked further potential. However, whether it can unlock enough potential to overcome Red Bull is debatable because, in my view, they are constrained by the fundamental chassis beneath the car," Hill continued.
"To hear Lewis say 'I'm enjoying driving the car.' That's an encouraging sign and a validation for him, as he had been saying, 'I told you we should have taken action earlier.'"
"They have now acted upon what he has fervently urged them to do, and they have witnessed progress. So, well done, Lewis."
Despite Red Bull maintaining a significant advantage over their rivals, Hill remains sceptical about Mercedes' chances of surpassing the Milton Keynes-based team before the season concludes.
"To dethrone Red Bull before the end of the season will prove immensely challenging," added Hill.
"I believe if, by the end of the season, they can firmly establish themselves as 'the threat' going into 2024, they will consider it a triumph."
The forthcoming Formula 1 event is the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, scheduled to take place from June 16 to 18.
