F1: Carlos Sainz admits to 'mixed feelings' over Ferrari departure

Carlos Sainz has opened up about his emotions surrounding his departure from Ferrari, expressing a sense of melancholy as he comes to terms with leaving the renowned team.

The Spaniard, known for his achievements as the sole driver to outpace a Red Bull in recent seasons, faces the prospect of being succeeded by Lewis Hamilton at Maranello starting in 2025.

"I have mixed feelings. I'm starting to see the growth of the (Ferrari) project now," Sainz told La Gazzetta dello Sport's Sportweek.

"The car is better and I have confidence driving it. That makes me happy for this year, but sad because we won't continue the journey together.

"But that's life. It wasn't my decision, but maybe there will be better things to come."

"I'm up at the moment from a sporting point of view, but a little down because I wanted to stay at Ferrari."

While there have been discussions of a potential one-year contract with Mercedes for 2025, sources suggest that Sainz is leaning towards a more enduring opportunity with the newly Audi-acquired Sauber team, seeking stability and a long-term commitment.

"I have to see all the offers," he continued. "In my head I haven't decided where to go yet."

Despite the changes on the horizon, Sainz maintains an optimistic outlook regarding his career, asserting his readiness to continue competing at the pinnacle of motorsports.

His departure from Ferrari marks a significant transition in his journey, one that he navigates with a mix of reflection and anticipation for what lies ahead in his racing career.

He added: "I smile when thinking about the future even if what happens doesn't depend solely on me. All options are open, but it takes time and it won't affect the way I race anyway."
