UFC 297 tips: Sean Strickland slight favourite ahead of Dricus Du Plessis title showdown

Sean Strickland UFC middleweight champion

The first numbered UFC event of 2024 is set to produce fireworks, with Sean Strickland defending his middleweight championship against Dricus Du Plessis in the main event.

Controversial, outspoken, opinionated. Say what you want about Strickland – the one thing you can’t deny is his fighting ability.

The current middleweight title holder tends to make more headlines for his words than his actions, though Saturday night will provide him with an opportunity to solidify his championship credentials.

Strickland won the title in Australia with a unanimous decision over Israel Adesanya back in September. He enters his first title defence as slight favourite, with bookmakers pricing the 32-year-old at 5/6.

Du Plessis, on the other hand, arrives in Toronto having yet to taste defeat in the UFC.

The South African challenger is 6-0 with the organisation, beating Robert Whittaker with a second round TKO last July.

Many are expecting a fast start from Du Plessis, with the 30-year-old potentially looking to get the job done early.

Strickland, who has the cardio than a Saudi Arabian Majaheem camel, is likely to come under early pressure. However, should the American survive the early onslaught, he is the man to back.

The longer the fight lasts, the more we favour Strickland. With that in mind, our recommendation is to back the defending champion to win on points.

Another option in the betting is backing at least three completed rounds at around the 11/10 mark.

Suggested bets

Sean Strickland to win on points (7/2)
Total rounds completed – at least three (11/10)
