OKTAGON 52: Jonas Magard edges towards bantamweight title shot with win over Jack Cartwright

Denmark’s Jonas Magard moved a step closer to a potential bantamweight championship fight following his victory over Jack Cartwright at OKTAGON 52 in Newcastle.

The main event bout, which had a fiery build-up, saw the Dane pick up a unanimous decision.

Magard produced 94 significant strikes, compared to 22 by Cartwright who struggled to find his rhythm throughout the three-round bout.

The victory puts Magard on a potential collision course with OKTAGON bantamweight champion Felipe Lima.

The Dane lost against Lima by a unanimous decision back in July, though a rematch between the two seems unavoidable.

In the co-main event, Matej Penaz stopped Matthew Bonner in the second-round to not only claim the win but also the cash bonus for the performance of the night.

The Czech fighter dominated proceedings and improved his record to 9-1 as he continues to forge his path in the middleweight division.

Welshman Aaron Aby was also successful in Newcastle. The Wrexham-native picked up a unanimous decision against American Christopher Daniel.

In the heavyweight division, England’s Stuart Austin made a serious bid for a heavyweight title shot after tapping out Poland’s Adam Palasz.

Austin, who improved his record to 18-8, is now on a three-fight win streak and is intent on challenging for the heavyweight crown in his next outing with OKTAGON.

The 35-year-old has fought a plethora of high-profile names during his career, including the interim UFC champion Tom Aspinall who he beat back in 2013.

In the first main card fight in Newcastle, Germany’s Max Holzer picked up a second-round submission victory over Britian’s Corey Fry.
