Salisbury best bet: Warranty set to run out a worthy winner

The biggest races on Saturday’s card might have been run elsewhere, but the last race of the night at Salisbury should give race-goers plenty to talk about as they wind their way home.

20:30 Salisbury:  William Hill Lengthen Your Odds Handicap  (1 miles 6 furlongs 44 yards)

If the bookies have calibrated the early betting correctly, then this handicap should develop into a three-horse race between the three clear market leaders.

Clan Chieftain should be more at ease on this firmer surface than when caught out by Ripon’s heavy ground a month ago, while It’s All About You is expected to come on further for his runner-up spot on season debut at Doncaster 23 days ago, which was also his stable debut for Jennie Candlish.

However, in a low-key race of this nature, it’s hard to imagine that clear favourite Warranty won’t be tuned up to land a similar blow to the one he inflicted on his eight rivals over this course and distance 20 days ago.

This versatile type enjoyed modest success for Mark Johnston, Gary Moore and Harry Whittingham over hurdles and on the Flat, before being moved on again this time last year, since when he has remained under the protective wing of Sheena West.

Suggested best bet: Warranty in the 20:30 at Salisbury

Rested for 13 months, two further hurdling efforts on his return this year both proved underwhelming, but his return to the Flat earlier this month was met with immediate and impressive success.

Pitched straight into decent company, the seven-year-old gelding made light of the testing conditions over this very trip, keeping on well enough to ease three lengths clear of the runner-up, with seven other rivals left floundering in the distant mud.

Conditions will be much less challenging to all concerned on this occasion, while the jump in class to 0-75 provided another test, but with Trevor Whelan again entrusted with the reins, Warranty has to be taken seriously here.
