Just the one runner for Frankie at Doncaster on Friday, but they don't get much better than Stradivarius, who won the Doncaster Cup in 2019.
2.40 Doncaster - Stradivarius
There's many a good tune played on an old fiddle and the horse named after the classic violin maker is as good as they get.
The three time Ascot Gold Cup winner was beaten by young pretender Trueshan in the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup in October 2020 but bounced back to take the Lonsdale Cup at York in August of this year.
"The Strad" is the apple of Frankie Dettori's eye, with John and Thady Gosden's seven year-old up there with the all time greats over long distance trips.
Alan King, Trueshan's trainer will be doing a rain dance on the Town Moor to summon as many forecasted showers as possible when the two face off on Friday in the Doncaster Cup. The Gosdens prefer ground with more than a bit of resistance for their star stayer but let's not forget that Stradivarius won the 2020 Gold Cup on soft ground at Ascot.
In class terms, the plucky Trueshan doesn't come close and Strad fans will be hoping that the rain stays off so this legend of the turf can do his thing. Odds-on is good value when Stradivarius opens up with Dettori aboard.
