Epsom Oaks News: Few downsides for favourite Emily Upjohn after Downs spin

John Gosden was encouraged by a prep run for his Emily Upjohn ahead of the Epsom Oaks on Friday June 3.

English flat racing royalty John Gosden was more than happy with Emily Upjohn's showing on the Cazoo Epsom Derby Gallops Morning.

Of course, his filly is favourite for the top females' race known as The Oaks and his three-year-old may prove an immovable object in the big race on June 3.

The Sea The Stars filly is likely to start odds-on for the one mile, four furlong test at Epsom after winning the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes last time out at York in facile fashion.

Frankie Dettori was brought in for the Epsom work and she ran well clear of the lead horse to leave Gosden chuffed with what he had witnessed.

"Frankie felt for a filly who has had three races in her life it would be nice to come here and just have a look at the track and a feel of the track," said the Clarehaven handler.
"She behaved great, moved very well, got her leads right coming down the hill and quickened up nicely.
"You can see by her size and frame that she's filled out well, as you would expect from a good 'doer'.
"She's shown the ability to quicken in the Musidora and at Wolverhampton last year. I think she has a change of gear, for sure."

Gosden, has had three previous Oaks successes with Taghrooda (2014), Enable (2017) and Anapurna (2019) and has an embarrasment of riches in the 2022 version thanks to Frankel filly Nashwa who is currently second in the market for the 2022 Oaks.

Nashwa has won well at Haydock and Newbury and might well come in under the radar in comparison to the natural headline-maker Emily Upjohn.
Gosden added: "This filly (Emily Upjohn) is guaranteed to get the mile and a half, but that's not the case with Nashwa - they are different types of filly.
"Emily Upjohn is in the Taghrooda league as she has the ability to travel and quicken over the trip. She picked up really well between the three and the two today, even though they were playing.
"She will be happy on good ground and can handle quick."
The Epsom Cazoo Oaks takes place on Friday June 3.
