Thursday Doncaster top racing tip: The Mighty Arc set to bounce back after recent setback

From a busy midweek race card, Tipstrr horse racing expert Steve Jones has picked out The Might Arc, whom he believes has been underestimated and over-priced for his race over the jumps at Doncaster.

It is no surprise to see the six-year-old Heroique De Maulde heading the early market following his two latest placed efforts over this distance at Newcastle.

Firstly, he was short-headed by a subsequent winner (off five pounds higher), before missing second place by less than a length to a next-time-out winner, so he has faced some progressive opposition of late.

This looks a bit easier and will be only his third start for James Ewart since arriving from France in October, and his new connections will now know a lot more about him, so another good run can be expected in conditions to suit.

However, one who can beat him today is The Mighty Arc, who looks to have been underestimated following a sub-par run last time out, with Wincanton's tight, right-handed track not suiting him at all, when all his best form has come on more galloping, left-handed tracks like the one he'll find at Doncaster.

His chances are therefore better judged on his penultimate run, which needs marking up significantly, as it was after a 280-day break, and was in a higher-graded Class 3 handicap on good ground over 19 furlongs on this track.
The Mighty Arc was very heavily backed down from 4/1 to 9/4 favourite just before the off in what was a 0-140 handicap with all five runners rated higher than any of to be found here.
If that market assessment was anywhere near accurate, then The Mighty Arc looks a very good-value bet in today's lower-graded handicap under a very similar set of conditions.
As it transpired, The Mighty Arc quickened to the front approaching the second-last, at which point things looked very good, but he stumbled very badly on landing after that penultimate fence.
That error saw him drop right to the back of the field, although he did manage to galvanise himself and finally only missed third place by a head.

it was therefore a far better performance than the result might suggest, plus he is now three pounds lower and racing in lower-graded 0-122 company.

The Mighty Arc won on his chasing debut at Worcester in November 2021, beating eight rivals by a more than four lengths in a two-and-a-half-mile handicap, and he followed that up at Sedgefield two months later to make it two out of three over fences, with both wins coming on galloping left-handed tracks.

He ended last season by being pulled up on unsuitably heavy ground in Class 2 company at Kelso and this season's opener in Class 3 at this track was very encouraging. This looks a lot easier and he should be a lot nearer the head of the market than he is.
