Stage Star will swerve the Paddy Power Gold Cup this weekend and be aimed at December's Gold Cup instead.

Paul Nicholls’ eight-year-old made his seasonal return when fourth in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree last month and now connections are not planning on returning to defend their Paddy Power Gold Cup crown.

The Owners Group-owned chaser, who is a three-time winner at Prestbury Park over fences, is now being aimed at the December Gold Cup at Cheltenham next month.

Trainer Paul Nicholls has an excellent track record in that contest winning it a record five times and came within a short head of claiming again with Il Ridoto last year.

“I think he will go back to Cheltenham for the December Gold Cup instead (of the Paddy Power),” said Dan Downie of the Owners Group.

“He’s all fine and flying since Aintree and you’d hope he will come on for that run as well.”
