Oisin Murphy builds up lead over Champion Jockey rival Buick with big Leicester win

Champion jockey elect Oisin Murphy opened up a double figure lead over Will Buick for the jockeys’ title on Sunday. He consolidated the gap with a 10/1 Leicester winner for Andrew Balding on Monday.

A win on Build Me Up means that Murphy is unlikely to let down Champion Jockey backers.

The Cork firecracker Murphy produced a 10/1 winner on the Andrew Balding trained Build Me Up at Leicester to shore up the double figure Champion Jockey gap to next best William Buick.

Murphy had broken new ground on Sunday with his first winner at Hamilton as he stretched his jockeys' championship lead over Buick to 10. He kept up the win rate on Monday when the Balding two year-old hosed up at 10/1 at Leicester.

Buick struck back with a win of his own on Nomadic Empire for David O'Meara at the East Midlands track.

Assessing his battle over the next month to outdo Buick and record his third successive title, Murphy told Racing TV: "It's really hotting up, (and) he's going to have a lot of ammunition coming up - with Charlie Appleby's two-year-olds. "So I'm going to have to work very hard, and stay out of the stewards' room - and I hope the yards I'm riding for will keep flying.

"They've been having great seasons - from Andrew Balding, Ed Walker, Hughie Morrison, Saeed bin Suroor, loads of people have been helping me. "So if we can finish off the next few weeks that would be brilliant."
