Risen Star Stakes success put the colt firmly in contention for the 2021 Kentucky Derby, but he fell just short of Medina Spirit in the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs.
Juddmonte Farms' Mandaloun confounded expectations by finishing runner-up in the Kentucky Derby, despite a 12th place position on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
The three-year-old Into Mischief colt is trained by Brad Cox. He has gained three wins from six starts, picking up total purse earnings of $961,252.
Mandaloun has, so far, enjoyed a solid three-year-old campaign with one win, one third and one sixth from three outings. He finished second in the Kentucky Derby, just a half-length behind winner Medina Spirit. At one point in the race, he overtook the Bob Baffert-trained colt but could not hold on to the lead.
2021 Road to the Kentucky Derby
Bred in Kentucky, Mandaloun was at home on the Churchill Downs racetrack.
Mandaloun's first Derby qualifying points came when he finished third in the January 16 Lecomte Stakes (G3) at Fair Grounds. In that event, he picked up two qualifying points for his third-place effort.
In the race, the colt broke and went four wide on the first turn before settling in third on the outside. He tried to push forward as he left the backstretch, chasing three-wide on the far turn. He ran to the outside of Proxy in the stretch and got close but could not finish better than third. The race was won by Midnight Bourbon, another top name on the 2021 Road to the Kentucky Derby, with Proxy in second.
Next time out, Mandaloun picked up a much larger number of Derby qualifying points when he won the February 13 Risen Star Stakes (G2) at Fair Grounds. The race, which awards qualifying points on a higher scale of 50-20-10-5, is always highly anticipated.
In the Risen Star, Mandaloun went four wide on the first turn before stalking the pace on the outside. He pushed forward and took the lead in the upper stretch, outrunning Midnight Bourbon until he crossed the line first. The second place was taken by Proxy and third by Midnight Bourbon.
With his victory in the Risen Star, Mandaloun brought his Derby qualifying points total to 52.
In the March 20 Louisiana Derby (G2), he failed to pick up any more qualifying points, finishing down in sixth, a full 12 lengths behind winner Hot Rod Charlie. Initially, he challenged strongly, but dropped back from third to sixth around the half-mile post despite being the heavy favourite prior to the race.
Mandaloun bursts onto the scene
Before his first Kentucky Derby qualifying race, Mandaloun won an allowance optional claiming event at Churchill Downs. He came into the November 28, 2020, race as the favourite and finished ahead of Twilight Blue, Founder and Pico d'Oro.
The colt's debut race was a maiden special-weight victory at Keeneland on October 24, 2020. Despite registering a career-low Speed Figure, he was able to outrun the field of 11, which included names like Bob's Edge in second, Rockstar Ro in third and Americanrevolution in fourth.
In that debut race, he ran far off the pace two wide and between horses before bumping Americanrevolution through the mid-stretch. He eventually ran inside the leader late in the race and pushed forward to cross the line first.
