Wyndham Championship tips: Russell Henley ready to convert solid form into tournament success

As the regular season draws to a close, golf pundit Martin Colwell takes a look at the Wyndham Championship to see who might make a late bid to secure a spot in the FedEx playoffs.

The Wyndham is the last tournament on the regular USPGA Tour calendar, and returns to its regular home at Sedgefield Country Club at Greensboro, North Carolina.
A par 70 and 7,131 yards in length with water hazards on six holes, the back nine is notoriously more difficult than the front, which could add to drama come Sunday afternoon
It looks like a wide-open tournament this week, with a number of golfers trying to make the top seventy in the Fed Ex rankings to progress to the play offs.
All prices quoted are with Planet Sport Bet, who are offering seven each-way places .

It looks like Hideki Matsuyama will tee off as one of the market leaders, despite failing to build on a great start at last week's 3M Open. Even if you can get 18/1, the 2021 Masters Champion is not looking great value to deliver the goods over four rounds.

A much better prospect and our top pick to go well is Russell Henley, whose price also appears to be firming up at around 18/1.

Henley hasn't been seen since missing the cut at The Open, but prior to that he finished an almost unnoticed fourth at the Masters, and has since secured top-20 finishes in six of his seven completions, including another solid performance to tie for 14th at the US Open.
Henley has excellent course form, tying for fifth behind Tom Kim here a year ago and appears to be the best-value bet out of the market principals.
Suggested bet: Russell Henley each-way in the Wyndham Championship

Virtually on the same mark is Sungjae Im, who boasts a good course record but is not at the top of his game at present, and the same could be said about Sam Burns, who is similarly priced at around 20/1.

Others to consider - or rather a swerve! Justin Thomas finished ninth at the Travelers but has made the weekend just once in four attempts since, when a distant 60th at the Scottish Open.

That form has seen JT slide to 28/1 in a B-level field, but even at that price he is best left alone, despite the need to deliver this week to make the playoffs.

Alex Smalley has been in good form, being runner up at the John Deere Classic. He is a member at this course and so should know the course inside out, and that gives him decent each way value at 35/1+.
Eric Cole is a big talent, whose first tour victory is surely just around the corner. His rookie year has seen him make 20 cuts out of 32, including all of the last seven.
Three top ten finishes (twice making the top five) included finishing runner-up to Chris Kirk after a playoff at the Honda Classic.

Cole looked good for a while last week before fading to share 30th, but I'm happy to keep faith with him while he still carries a 55/1 price tag.

Suggested bet: Eric Cole each-way in the Wyndham Championship
Wyndham legend, Webb Simpson, is 66/1, tempting price for a previous winner and a multiple placer in this tournament. Simpson does not play that much now, but did name one of his children after this championship, and obviously knows his way round the Sedgefield course.

There are a couple of outsiders I like - Dylan Wu is also a big talent, coming out of college and Korn Ferry Tour golf. He looks worthy of a cautious punt at close to triple-digit odds in this field.

And a stalwart of the tour after many years playing on it is the Scot, Martin Laird, who has won on tour and finished second last week at the 3M Open. Laird should be suited by a short course, where accuracy is key and he looks tastily priced at 120/1 or more.

Suggested bet: Martin Laird each-way in the Wyndham Championship
All prices quoted were correct with Planet Sport Bet at the time of publication, but might fluctuate before the tournament tees off.
