USPGA Tour preview and tips: Max Homa targets more Californian success at Pebble Beach

Max Homa

A stellar field turns out at Carmel Bay, California this week in a no-cut pro-am, and golf pundit Martin Colwell takes a closer look at the best prospects among the 80-player line-up.

Pebble Beach is a par-72 and 6,972 yards in length, while Spyglass Hill is a par 72 and 7,041 yards long - both courses are coastal and so can be impacted by wind.

Course experience has been a trait of previous winners, with Justin Rose winning here in a Monday finish a year ago. The pro-am element ends after two days on each of the two courses, with Pebble Beach taking centre stage over the weekend.

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are vying for favouritism at around the 8/1 mark. Rory is marginally favoured over Scottie, but this week looks tough and those short odds are not that attractive.

PlanetSportBet’s Top Price on the Planet: McIlroy and Scheffler 9/1 price boost

Viktor Hovland should be at ease in these conditions, and despite yet to hit his best form in 2024, his 11/1 price tag looks more appealing than the odds of the favourites.

The consistent but non-winning Xander Schauffele will no doubt be up there,  but appears to lack the zest to win, so 12/1 is hardly generous .

At 16/1 Max Homa offers more appeal as a multiple winner in California who has won in tough conditions on the tour.

Suggested bet: Max Homa each-way in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Jordan Spieth has great course form and can play in bad weather. The 2017 winner here can be prone to errors that knock him back off the lead, but 16/1 will attract plenty of attention among punters on this course.

It’s hard to see Patrick Cantlay playing well in any weather that is not hot and dry, and he offers no interest here at a somewhat stingy 20/1

His Ryder Cup team-mate Justin Thomas could bring his A-game here this week, and his experience around this track makes 20/1 seem a fair price. Matt Fitzpatrick looks even tastier at 33/1 as he is always a good each-way shout in challenging conditions..

Nicolai Hojgaard finished runner-up last week at Torrey Pines, and the Dane looks destined to become a star on the American tour. The strength of the elevated field this week means 35/1 is available, and given his excellent form, there are worse picks at those odds.

At the same price, Jason Day has a cracking record in this tournament, so while his form has been disappointing these past two weeks, it would be no surprise to see the Australian rekindle his flame here.

Last but not least, Sahith Theegala is a California native and contends regularly, but can also miss the cut. He certainly has the skill set to go well this week and his current 60/1 odds could look good if he can get through the first two days.

Suggested bet: Sahith Theegala (45/1) each-way in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Suggested each-way bet summary:

  • Max Homa 16/1 - 3 points each way
  • Viktor Hovland 11/1 - 3 points each way
  • Sahith Theegala 60/1 - 1 point each way
