AT&T Byron Nelson preview and tips: Brandon Wu ready to step up in Texas

Tree-lined fairways and water in play around the course via a stream that runs through it. The fairways are Zoysia grass based, which can produce flyers, while the rough is Bermuda grass and the flat greens are Bentgrass, with regular watering making them slower than most on the Tour.

Texan Scottie Scheffler will unsurprisingly tee off as the short priced 7/2 favourite this week. In the absence of Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, Scheffler is clearly the best golfer in this week's field, but he has had a few woes with the putter recently and so could be given a miss at those odds.

Tyrrell Hatton is next in the betting market at 12/1 or better. Hatton had a placed finish last week at the Wells Fargo but was complaining (when is he not?!) about his poor iron play, and his game might be better suited to a tougher test than this.

Jumping down the betting Brandon Wu was third last time out in Mexico behind the formidable duo of Tony Finau and Jon Rahm, and was also runner-up to Justin Rose at Pebble Beach earlier this year.

A big star in U.S. collegiate golf previously, Wu is looking to establish himself further on this tour, and the 50/1 available looks decent enough for him to feature in this field.

At around the 16/1 mark is Jason Day and Tom Kim. The latter went through a poor spell earlier this year, but has been showing signs of improvement recently, and the fact that distance is not a requirement off the tee here will suit Mr Kim.

K H Lee has won this tournament in each of the past two years (-25 in 2021 and -26 last year), so obviously comes into calculations. However, the betting market may have now found him out at 22/1 this week, and I am willing to go against Lee pulling off a rare "three-peat" this week.

More appealing is that wily veteran, Matt Kuchar, at around 28/1. Placed in this tournament in the past and in decent enough form, the second-shot approach game should suit his style of play on this course.

Last but not least, Englishman Aaron Rai catches my eye at up to 80/1. The two-gloved boy from the Black Country is inconsistent but does show up on leaderboards more regularly these days.

Rai is a top iron player that can be let down by his short game, so if he can hold it together around the greens he might just be in the leading pack on Sunday evening.
