Ryder Cup tips: Dustin Johnson good value as top points scorer

The Ryder Cup is back this Friday for the first time since 2018 and Planet Sport tipster Jack Kelliher turns his expert eye towards the points market.

After a year of disruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ryder Cup is back at Whistling Straits with Team Europe aiming to retain their 2018 title.

Planet Sport's Jack Kelliher shares three players who he expects to make a big impact at this year's tournament in the points market. Check out his video selections below.

Team Europe top scorer

First up is team Europe, and Kelliher tips that Rory McIlory to lead his team to victory come Friday and lead the points scoring.

"I believe the value lies with Rory McIlory, available at 5/1. I expect Rory to play all five matches for the European team this week and there are plenty European players that are out of form.

"Fleetwood, Hatton, Fitzpatrick, Poulter, these guys are not in great form. Rory is going to be the standout player this week for the European team. At 5/1, a point bigger than Jon Rahm - he is the one I would like to take a chance on."

Team USA top scorer

For team USA, Kelliher has two standout selections, starting with 2017 PGA Championship winner, Justin Thomas.

"He is a player that has a 80% strike rate in the Ryder Cup, he's got a great iron game and that is going to suit him really well at Whistling Straits this week. It is going to suit the track; it is going to really lend itself to birdies.

"So my selections cover all of those attributes. My first selection is Justin Thomas at 7/1."

Kelliher's second selection for Team USA is World No. 2 Dustin Johnson, priced at 15/2 with PlanetSportBet.

"As we touched on in our first preview, driving distance is going to be a key indicator for success this week. Well 'DJ' hits it far, he hits it low, and he hits it straight, and I really like that.

"I also like that fact that he comes in under the radar. Captain Steve Stricker I believe will put a lot of faith in 'DJ' this week - the most experienced player on the Ryder Cup team for the USA.

"Albeit he doesn't have the greatest record, I believe he will quietly go about his business. He will definitely play four matches and could play all five. So they are the two to go to war with on the USA team in the top scorer market."
