QBE Shootout: Aussie duo Marc Leishman and Jason Day extend lead in Florida finale

The best stats, quotes and social after the second day of the PGA Tour’s concluding event of the year.

Marc Leishman and Jason Day kept their foot on the accelerator in round two of the QBE Shootout in Florida on Saturday, combining for an 8-under 64 in the modified alternate shot format.

One clear at the start of play after a 55 in Friday's scramble, the Aussie duo extended that lead to three with just Sunday's closing four-balls to come.

Leishman and Day head the field on 24-under but plenty of rivals are stacked up behind them.

Pre-tournament favourites Billy Horschel and Sam Burns surged into tied second after a scintillating 10-under 62 while two more all-American pairings - Matt Kuchar and Harris English (66) and Kevin Na and Jason Kokrak (64) - are also at 21-under.

Leishman, in particular, has had the magic touch at Tiburon Golf Club this week.

For the second day running he holed out for eagle, this time on the short, par-4 10th.

The Australian duo added six birdies, and three par breakers in the last four holes gave them some separation from the field.

But in a tournament where scoring is wild, is a three-stroke lead enough?

Fate of the 36-hole leaders

Kuchar and English were five ahead after two rounds last year and ran out nine-shot winners.
Kevin Tway and Rory Sabbatini were part of a five-way tie for top spot before going on to lift the trophy in 2019.
Those two latest examples are part of a long-standing theme.
In 32 past editions of this event, the second-round leaders/co-leaders have gone on to win 20 times.

Marc Leishman and Jason Day (-24)

Marc Leishman: "I think there's a good chance that before we even tee off we won't be leading. I think when you saw some of the scores today, Billy and Sam shot 10 under? That's unbelievable in foursomes, or modified foursomes given that. I think we're going to have to play good, make putts."
Jason Day: "Man, we did a lot of good things today. I mean, anytime out of position or whatnot, we got up and down or kept our momentum going forward, which was nice. It was nice to be able to go bogey-free in that kind of format. Unfortunately I missed a few too many easy putts out there."

Billy Horschel and Sam Burns (-21)

Billy Horschel: "I think we both knew coming in today Sam was going to put the ball in the fairway because he hits it a long way, a lot further than I do. I was going to have to hit really good second shots, so I was just hoping to hit some really good close ones and I did. I hit some great wedge shots to 25 feet, 30 feet that he made. Yeah, it worked out very well."
Sam Burns: "I rolled it well today. And then whenever he putted, he rolled it well, too. So we both kind of picked each other up whenever we hit bad shots. Really just overall a solid round."

Matt Kuchar and Harris English (-21)

Matt Kuchar: "Yeah, it looks like the strongest teams have kind of put themselves on top of the leaderboard and I feel like we're in the mix and it will be an exciting day tomorrow, for sure."
Harris English: "Alternate shot's always tough. Kuch missed a couple holes not putting and you give him a six- or seven-footer, it's tough. Having a round with no bogeys is always good. We played some solid golf, it's just one of those days we didn't get a whole lot of putts to fall, but it happens. I'm happy with 6-under. We're right in the thick of it and looking forward to tomorrow playing best ball and see if we can get after it."

Kevin Na and Jason Kokrak (-21)

"We played great. We had a couple hiccups, but we played great. We're in good position. That's what we were trying to do today. Fell back a little bit, but the last seven holes we put ourselves to have a chance."
Jason Kokrak: "We played very nice. Got in some sticky situations, played it nicely. Bogeys on 10 and 11 unfortunate, but you're going to make mistakes in this format. We got out of that funk, hit some good shots and really finished nicely."
