PGA Tour news: Sam Ryder tames windy conditions to lead Farmers Insurance Open

Sam Ryder will take a three-shot lead into the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open after mastering the windy conditions at Torrey Pines on Thursday.

Ryder shared the overnight lead with England's Aaron Rai and fellow American Brent Grant but managed to create some daylight between himself and the rest of the pack after following up his opening 64 with a well-played 58 in challenging conditions.
His 12-under par total of 132 left him three strokes clear of playing partner Brendan Steele.
"It feels great," said Ryder, who at 33 is still chasing his first PGA Tour victory.
"The thing I've been kind of telling myself is to just try and embrace it. It's not a position that I've been in a lot, you know, so just trying to enjoy it.
"I feel like I had a couple nice bunker saves, things that you have to do to keep rounds going especially on a tough day like this, where it's windy around a tough course," he added.
Ryder held as much as a five-shot lead before Steele closed with back-to-back birdies to close the gap.
PGA Tour rookie Tano Goya of Argentina had six birdies in a five-under 67 to lie in solo third on seven-under 137.
Spain's Jon Rahm, who is chasing his third straight win on tour, followed up his opening 73 with a much more impressive 67, but it still leaves him eight shots adrift.
"The goal is to win," said the Spaniard, who clearly isn't counting himself out yet.

This year's Farmers Insurance Open started on a Wednesday so that it final-round broadcast on American TV channel CBS would not conflict with its NFL playoffs coverage.

When the NFL expanded to a 17-game regular season in 2022, that changed the postseason schedule as everything got pushed back a week, meaning the two conference title games now fell on the same day as the final round at Torrey Pines.
