PGA Championship hero Michael Block misses out on US Open qualification in Toronto

After captivating spectators at last month's PGA Championship at Oak Hill, Michael Block won't have the chance to replicate that feat at the upcoming US Open.

Michael Block, the 46-year-old club professional who thrilled the crowds at last month's PGA Championship at Oak Hill, won't get an opportunity to do the same at the US Open.
Unfortunately for Block - and golf fans everywhere - he could only finish sixth of 27 players in a 36-hole qualifier in Toronto on Monday.
Block needed a top-three finish to secure his place in the field at Los Angeles Country Club later this month.
Rounds of 69 and 66 at Lambton Golf & Country Club were more than respectable and handed him a five-under-par total, but it still wasn't enough.
Instead, the three US Open spots went to Ryan Gerard, who led the way on 11 under, followed by Vincent Norrman of Sweden on eight under and Ryan Armour on seven under.
Harry Hall of England and Jimmy Walker claimed the two alternate spots by finishing on six under, one ahead of Block.
Block was attempting to qualify in Toronto after received a sponsor's exemption to compete in this week's RBC Canadian Open.
His 18-year-old son Dylan also made it to the final round of US Open qualifying in Los Angeles, but was not able to advance further after opening with a 10-over 81 at Hillcrest Country Club.
The largest qualifier took place in Columbus, Ohio, where the PGA Tour was for the Memorial Tournament last weekend.
Olin Browne Jr., the 34-year-old son of former PGA Tour winner Olin Browne, claimed medalist honors at 11 under with rounds of 66 67.
Others to secure qualification included Stewart Cink, Davis Thompson, Eric Cole, Luke List and Patrick Rodgers. Kevin Streelman and two amateurs, Nick Dunlap of Alabama and David Nyfjall of Sweden, qualified out of a four-way playoff, with 2009 US Open champ Lucas Glover missing out.
