Keegan Bradley had a flawless opening round at Castle Pines Golf Club in Denver, earning himself a one-shot lead at the BMW Championship after the opening round.

The American, who scraped into the last available spot in the 50-strong field for the tournament, opened his round on Thursday with two straight birdies.

He added a third on the par-five eighth hole and picked up two more down the stretch without dropping a shot to head into the second round with a narrow lead on six under.

Bradley, who was recently named a surprise choice to lead America's 2025 Ryder Cup team, said following his round: "I want to be out there with the guys and the Ryder Cup team.

"I want to be playing with them, on the range with them, in the locker room, in the tournament.

"It was really important for me to be in this top 50."

He leads by one from Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, who won last week's FedEx St Jude Championship. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy is tied for 10th after carding a two under 70.
