Musselburgh racing tips: West Lawn ready to take on Not The Chablis

Musselburgh’s last jumps race of the afternoon offers up an intriguing handicap with a whole host of decent chasers ready to battle it out over a testing three-mile trip.

The early-morning withdrawal of the strongly-fancied Dr Shirocco has levelled the playing field a little for the other market principals, while also enhancing the each-way prospects deeper down the betting in a race offering four places in many quarters.

Of those carrying place possibilities, top-weigh Shadow In The Sky could continue his improvement after wind surgery, having hinted at promise on his season and chasing debut at Newcastle last month.

Catching the eye of a fair few of Tipstrr’s each-way specialists, however, is James Walton’s West Lawn, who landed a couple of hurdle wins at Hexham last year, and who has been gradually transitioning to larger obstacles this season.

Higher up the betting market, both Deep Charm and the Lucinda Russell-trained So They Say hold strong claims after bouncing back to form with decent recent efforts (winner and runner-up respectively), but it is the equally well-supported Not The Chablis who has attracted most attention within the Tipstrr camp.

Both of his wins over obstacles have come at this venue, the last of which was his only chase success over this course and distance, albeit in 2021 before he was out of action for over 15 months.

Sparingly raced this year, he returned to action six weeks ago after another long summer break, and put in a decent performance to finish a respectable sixth of 12 over an extended two and a half miles at Ayr.

After being held up most of the way round, he was left poorly positioned, but still finished just eight lengths behind the winner with plenty of scope for improvement here.

The Alexander yard is producing horses in good shape just lately, with three winners from their last 17 completions, including 3/1 shot Eloi Du Puy at Carlisle on Sunday, so hopes will be high for more success here.
