2024 Belgian Darts Open tips: Dimitri Van den Bergh homecoming, Michael van Gerwen threat

The PDC European Tour is back for the new season as Dimitri Van den Bergh returns to his homeland for the Belgian Darts Open which begins on Friday night.

Van den Bergh will enter his homecoming in Oktoberhallen as the newly crowned UK Open champion following a thrilling win over Luke Humphries last weekend.

The 29-year-old has momentum on his side, and he will be determined on picking up more silverware in front of his home fans.

That is far easier said than done as the Belgian star competes against a stacked 48-player field.

The likes of Luke Humphries, Luke Littler, Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith are all involved in the event as they look to bolster their campaigns.

One man who will undoubtedly take some beating is defending Belgian Darts Open champion, Michael van Gerwen.

The Dutchman will make the short drive across the border, looking to defend his crown and bounce back from his fourth-round exit at the recent UK Open.

Gerwen has enjoyed a strong start to 2024, dominating the current Premier League campaign and reaching the recent Masters final.

With the exception of the Premier League mini-tournaments, the 34-year-old is yet to get his hands on a trophy.

It’s only a matter of time before the former world champion ends that run and we’re backing him to do just that in Belgium.

Looking at other potential challengers, Nathan Aspinall could play his part. The Asp has been steadily improving, reaching the Masters semi-final and winning a recent Premier League event.

Another outsider to consider is Ryan Searle. The 36-year-old has reached three finals from four Players Championship events this season – averaging over 107 in two of those finals.

If Heavy Metal can replicate those numbers in front of the Belgian fans, he will undoubtedly be a threat in this inaugural 2024 European Tour event.
