Michael van Gerwen picks up a second European title in 2022 after Austrian Darts Open triumph

The Dutchman followed up his German Darts Championship win in March by scooping the Austrian Darts Open on Sunday evening.

Michael van Gerwen added to his 2022 silverware on Sunday evening with an impressive win against compatriot Danny Noppert in the final of the Austrian Darts Open.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed plenty of previous success in the tournament, winning it three times throughout his career including the last time it took place in 2019.

He started Sunday's running in fine form, first seeing off Premier League rival James Wade in the round of 16 before beating fellow Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode in the quarter-finals.

Stephen Bunting put up a good challenge to Van Gerwen in the final four, but the Brit eventually bowed out following a 7-5 defeat.
That set up a finale between Van Gerwen and world No.12 Danny Noppert, who had beaten Jonny Clayton, Joe Cullen and Nathan Aspinall en-route to the showpiece.
Van Gerwen stormed into a 3-0 lead early on, but momentum looked to switch thereafter, with Noppert levelling it up at 3-3.

From there, the duo locked horns and were still at a stalemate at 5-5. But Van Gerwen - as he usually does - was able to up the levels for the final few legs, and the current world No.3 won the final three legs to win 8-5, landing two 14-darters in the process.

The win marked Van Gerwen's fourth ranking title of 2022 already, after he managed just one across the entirety of last year.

He also pockets a handy ÂŁ25,000 prize for winning the tournament - the fourth time he has done so throughout his career.

"I always want to win, I always put pressure on my shoulders so to win this title means a lot," said Van Gerwen after his title win.
"We all had to wait a long time to play this tournament again but this crowd made it worth the wait; they were phenomenal, not just for me but for everyone in the tournament.

"It was really hard to perform on stage because of the heat which makes me even more proud of myself to get this win."
The European Tour returns with the Interwetten European Darts Open (ET5) from May 6-8 at the Ostermann Arena in Leverkusen, Germany.
