South Africa vs India first Test day three: Tips and suggested bets

India's Ravichandran Ashwin

South Africa and India return for day three of the first Test with the home side hoping to build on their small lead.

While KL Rahul managed to get to his hundred on the second morning, India couldn't crack 250 batting first as South Africa picked up the two wickets they needed to end the tourists' innings and take charge of the match.

Retiring Dean Elgar is clearly determined to go out on a high as he guided the Proteas into a first innings lead with a big hundred that put South Africa on top.

South Africa appeared to get use of the pitch just as a bit of the venom has gone out of it which is not unsual for SuperSport Park where batting is easiest on day two and three.

On day three, the hosts will want to take the game right away from India, considering that their spinners might begin to factor later in this Test match.

South Africa lead by 11 runs with five second innings wickets in hand.

South Africa vs India first Test day three: Suggested bets

Marco Jansen is with Dean Elgar at the wicket as the match heads into day three and if he can reach a second Test 50 on Thursday it would prove a boon to the bold punters backing him.

If India take their lessons from day two, they will get their pacemen to pitch it up and bring the bowled dismissal in, even for a set batter like Elgar.

India would do very well to keep South Africa from building a one-hundred-run lead. With South Africa down a batter due to Temba Bavuma's injury, they don't have the batting resources they would like to extend this innings.

Elgar somehow failing to get to 150 from his position overnight is another longshot that could be a different prospect when tomorrow morning rolls around.

With the pitch become a little uneven, even Elgar may struggle to get going again and him missing out on that 150 could be a windfall for others.

Predictions

- Marco Jansen to score a 50

- Next dismissal to be bowled

- South Africa to be bowled out for less than 330

- Elgar to miss out on 150
