India cruise to victory against Australia in first ODI to go top of world rankings

India cruised to a five-wicket victory over Australia in the opening one-day international in Mohali, which saw them move top of the world rankings.

Mohammed Shami returned a five-wicket haul as Australia were dismissed for 276, with David Warner having top-scored on 52 while Josh Inglis made 45 after Steve Smith had added 41.

In reply, Shubman Gill (74) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) each scored half-centuries in a 142-run opening stand.

Even though India did lose a few quick wickets, Suryakumar Yadav made 50 and stand-in captain KL Rahul finished unbeaten on 58 to guide the hosts to victory at 281 for five.

India moved top of the International Cricket Council's (ICC's) ODI world rankings ahead of Pakistan as they look to retain pole position heading into a home World Cup.

With India already occupying the top spot in both the Test and T20 standings, it is only the second time in men's cricket history that a nation has achieved the number one ranking across all formats, with South Africa last doing so in August 2012.
