Holland head coach Ryan Campbell on the road to recovery

Holland men's head coach Ryan Campbell has left hospital after recovering from several cardiac arrests.

The 50-year-old Australian was placed in intensive care and an induced coma upon his arrival at the Royal Stoke University, after being taken ill on a family holiday in Cheshire in April.

Further hospital tests showed no damage to Campbell's heart and he is expected to make a full recovery and a swift return to his coaching duties with the Dutch team.

Campbell said: "I want to take this opportunity to thank the amazing nurses and doctors at the Royal Stoke Hospital critical care unit for their incredible professionalism, kindness and compassion.

"I want to say a big thank you to all my well-wishers around the world. The amount of messages of love and support my family and I received was extremely humbling."
Campbell was also indebted to Beci Bassett, a member of the public who gave Campbell CPR.
"Her courage and quick intervention simply saved my life," he said.

ESPN Africa reported that doctors at the Royal Stoke University Hospital believe the cardiac arrests could have been a delayed response to having Covid-19 in February 2022, which had an impact on his respiratory system.

Campbell has been coach of the Netherlands Cricket Team since 2017 as well as playing two ODI's for Australia and being part of the Hong Kong side at the T20 World Cup in 2016.

He also holds the record for being the oldest player to have made a debut in a T20 international at 44 years and 30 days.

The cricket community has reached out to support Campbell including Christina Matthews, former head of the Western Australia Cricket Association.

"On behalf of all WA Cricket staff, players and the wider cricket community, I would like to pass on our heartfelt thoughts to Ryan, his wife Leontina, and their family at this time," she said.
