Fourth Ashes Test day three betting tips: England firm favourites but weather could pose problems

Planet Sport previews the third day of action at Old Trafford as England look to turn on the style in the must-win Test.

Day two at Old Trafford gave us another day of milestones. Moeen Ali brought up the double of 3,000 Test runs and 200 Test wickets. Zak Crawley and Joe Root piled the pressure on Australia with a partnership of over 200 runs. Crawley played the leading role, scoring 189 at a strike rate over 100.

England will resume their first innings on an impressive 384 for four after 72 overs - and 67-run lead. Here are our suggested bets for day three.

England to win at 10/11

In anticipation of a rain-shortened match, England motored along at almost five and a half runs per over in their first innings. They look well positioned to be the first team in the series to break the 450-mark.

Mitchell Starc went off injured late on Thursday. That could weaken the visitors' bowling attack. If the left-arm quick remains off the field on day three, England may want to target a line-up lacking variety. Australia's seam bowling attack would then consist of four right-arm fast seamers.

Although the fourth Test is only two days old, the hosts' belligerent approach and the Aussies potentially being one bowler lighter put England as firm favourites to win.

If you reckon rainy weather will be too big a factor to produce a result, a draw is priced at 6/5.

Next man out - Harry Brook - at 4/5

Ben Stokes' batting numbers in Ashes series in England include a batting average of 44.31, with three centuries and five half-centuries. Harry Brook only has two Test half-centuries to show for his performances in home conditions.

Brook's Test batting average of 65.12 shows he has what it takes to score big. It may only be a matter of time before he scores his first century in England. He'll need to stay at the crease for quite a while longer to do that. Stokes is at 10/11 to be the next man out.

Next wicket dismissal - caught - at 1/2

England might look to continue playing their shots to further extend their lead at a rapid rate. More attacking shots could also translate to more catching opportunities. Both batters at the wicket have been out caught more than 60 percent of the time when they've been dismissed in Tests.
The pitch has shown signs of variable bounce. This was evident when Root was dismissed with a ball that kept low. Stokes, faced a few deliveries that hit the splice of the bat from balls with extra bounce. If you think there may be a few more dismissals, similar to Root's, then bowled as the next mode of dismissal is at 3/1.
