‘I want to fight Floyd Mayweather’ - Ex Love Island star Idris Virgo eyes four potential opponents

Idris Virgo revealed he wants to share the square circle with 15-time world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The former Love Island contestant defeated Aaron Chalmers inside three rounds in his last outing and his now setting his sights on the 46-year-old boxing icon.

Mayweather has been involved in a number of lucrative exhibition fights since 2018 and also shared the ring with Chalmers back in January 2023.

The American dominated the bout over the scheduled eight rounds, though Virgo believes his performance against that same opponent far exceeded Mayweather’s effort.

He told Planet Sport: “I really want to fight Floyd Mayweather because I’ve done something that Floyd couldn’t, in three rounds. Floyd had eight round and he couldn’t get Aaron out of there. I got him out in three rounds.

“I want to fight Floyd because I don’t believe he is TBE [The Best Ever] anymore. I’m the greatest, I’m the best ever because if Floyd couldn’t do something, and I did it, it shows the level that Floyd is at and it shows the level that I’m at."

Looking at other potential opponents, Virgo named fellow Love Island contestant Jack Fincham.

The 32-year-old boasts an impressive amateur boxing record and has also dabbled in the influencer boxing scene.

Virgo added: “I want to fight Jack Fincham as well, from Love Island. Because I believe that an all-Love Island bout needs to happen ASAP. He’s ducked me and now is fighting someone else in November.

“I would like to fight Chris Avila, from America. Nate Diaz’s best mate. I call him waterboy.”

Virgo also called out former super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch.

The 46-year-old retired from professional boxing back in May 2014 following his knockout victory over George Groves at Wembley stadium.

Virgo said: “Last person would be Carl Froch. I’m after the big names and I’m after those guys who are retiring at the top of the food chain. I want to test where I’m at so I wouldn’t mind fighting Carl Froch.”
