Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in line for September trilogy fight with Gennadiy Golovkin

The world has been left to pick up the pieces during a time of uncertainty due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Many countries are in lockdown whilst public events and gatherings have been banned across the world.
The Premier League, Formula 1, NBA and horse racing events such as the Grand National have all been postponed amid fears of the outbreak.Boxing has followed other sports in cancelling fights for the remainder of March and April.
DAZN were set to make the announcement of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s return on Cinco de Mayo against WBO super-middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders last week until dramatic developments of COVID-19.

The marketing team for DAZN had already designed posters for the May 2 event, which was set to be the first major event for 200 countries and territories, including the UK, with the monthly subscription reported to be £4.99 a month.

However, the spread of the virus has forced them to delay the announcement and maybe the fight itself after reports of a trilogy encounter for Canelo in September.

Sources have told Boxing365 that Canelo is set to face nemesis Gennadiy Golovkin for a third time on Mexican Independence weekend as long as the world recovers in time from the ever-spreading virus.

It is believed Golden Boy Promotions are planning to stage the bout at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas on September 12 after Golovkin previously stated his reluctance to fight in Las Vegas again because of controversial decisions against Canelo in 2017 and 2018.

The first bout between them ended as a split-draw despite Golovkin dominating proceedings. One year later, Canelo returned from serving his six-month ban for failing a drugs test to take on GGG at the T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Boy fighter unified the middleweight division with a majority-decision victory.

It was both of their last fights on HBO before moving on after the network confirmed its intentions to leave the boxing market following more than 40 years of unrivaled coverage.

Can DAZN get the trilogy over the line?

Canelo joined DAZN in the biggest deal in boxing history, signing an 11-fight, $365 million contract. Golovkin followed suit in 2019 in hope to pursue a third fight with Canelo. However, thus far, negotiations have stalled between the two camps, much to the frustration of DAZN, who are desperate to make the fight.
Since fighting on DAZN, Canelo has become a four-division champion with victories over Rocky Fielding, Daniel ‘Miracle Man’ Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev. He’s the first Mexican to win four weight classes above 147-pounds.
Meanwhile, Golovkin - under new trainer Johnathon Banks - has defeated Steve Rolls and Sergiy Derevyanchenko and currently holds the IBF middleweight strap. DAZN executive chairman John Skipper is hopeful of making the fight for September 12 as they look to dramatically increase disappointing numbers on the USA platform.
It appears unlikely that the bout will take place at 160-pounds though, due to Canelo’s last fight being at light-heavyweight against Kovalev. It would seem to make perfect sense for the pair to fight at a catchweight of 164-pounds just like Golovkin did in his first outing for DAZN.
All will be revealed but while we currently live in a world which is full of negativity and fearing the worst, the reports of Canelo taking on GGG is much welcomed news.
