Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs Gennadiy Golovkin trilogy talks begin for 2021

Fierce rivals Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin are in talks to stage a third bout on Cinco de Mayo next year.

Should it come into fruition, they will meet in May 2021 - a weekend which commemorates the Mexican's victory over the French in 1862. The occassion is often compared to as the Super Bowl of boxing.

The pair have previously fought in 2017 and 2018 with both ending in huge controversy. The first bout ended as a draw whilst the second went in favour of Canelo’s via majority decision.
Despite negotiations for a trilogy breaking down last year, it now appears Canelo is open to the possibility, which will delight DAZN bosses, who are desperate for big subscription numbers on the American platform.

GGG penned with DAZN in 2019 to try and make the fight happen, signing a lucrative $100m, six-fight deal. He has four fights remaining at the ripe age of 38, having defeated Steve Rolls and Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the IBF middleweight world title at Madison Square Garden last year meaning if the two commence battle, GGG will be 39.

Golovkin holds the joint-record for middleweight title defences

Meanwhile, Canelo has unified the middleweight division whilst winning world titles in two other divisions to become Mexico’s first four-division champion above welterweight. His most recent victory was a spectacular knockout of Sergey Kovalev at 175-pounds.
According to Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez - who represents Canelo alongside Oscar De La Hoya - talks are taking place between both camps.
"We have had some discussions about doing the third fight with Golovkin which would be very exciting,” he told Sky Sports.
"He is willing to entertain that third fight.
"Hopefully we can surprise everybody by getting that fight going next year.
"They both realise now that their events were very successful. For them, monetarily, it would be very beneficial to fight again.
"More than anything, the fans are very interested. Both fights were very close and exciting.
"They both realise that now.
"They are both open to the fight."
Before any chance of the bout happening, Golovkin has to take care of his mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta while Canelo is set to face a British fighter next.
Billy Joe Saunders was originally selected as his next opponent for the WBO super middleweight title but he pulled himself out after revealing he didn’t have enough time to prepare for the fight.
