Manny Pacquiao eyeing record win against Gennadiy Golovkin

'PacMan' is hoping to become a nine-division world champion...

Rumours are refusing to go away about the prospect of Manny Pacquaio stepping up to face Gennadiy Golovkin at middleweight.

The Filipino star could well be aiming to become the first nine-division world champion by fighting GGG, who currently holds the IBF world title.

Pacquaio has won titles at every division from flyweight to junior middleweight and has established himself as one of the sport’s greatest fighters. Golovkin, who is in talks for a 2021 showdown with arch-rival Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, is a two-time world middleweight champion, The Ring’s former Pound for Pound king and holds the joint record for most defences at 160-pounds alongside Bernard Hopkins.

A potential super-fight between the pair could become one of the all-time classics, pitting two legends against each other in the ring with Pacquiao’s unbelievable speed against the Kazakh’s precision and power.
Golovkin’s record currently stands at 40-1-1, having won 35 of those bouts via brutal KOs. The Pacman, as Pacquaio is commonly known, is 62-7-2 (39 KOs).
The Filipino’s trainer, Freddie Roach, said back in June that his fighter ‘wants to fight the top guys’.
Speaking to DAZN, he said: “He doesn’t just want to beat anybody, he wants to beat the best out there.”

This suggests that Pacquaio is out to make history although it could end in devastating fashion according to the man who knows him the best.

“I would not advise him to go 160lbs, that would be a little crazy. But putting him at 147lbs was a risk at one time…it made good sense to all of us to fight the great Oscar [De La Hoya]. It was a great deal and it worked out really well for us.”

The Big Drama show or a freak show?

Pacquaio shocked the world back in 2008 when he dethroned De La Hoya at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to win at 154-pounds. Over a decade on, Pacquiao continues to overcome the odds with victories over Adrien Broner and Keith Thurman.
Golovkin has shared the ring with a welterweight before in Kell Brook, who ended up retiring after the fifth round with a broken eye socket in London.

One thing is for certain: this would be a huge fight that would see millions of fans tune in to see, even if both men have seen better days. DAZN would be the front-runners to broadcast the event, something John Skipper would love with the OTT platform desperate for subscription numbers.
Golovkin is known for bringing the “Big Drama Show” but if anything a match-up between the pair would end up as the “Big Freak Show”.
