Exclusive: The Paul brothers are great for boxing, says WBC president

Jake Paul most recently beat a former UFC welterweight champion while Logan Paul fought Floyd Mayweather in June.

Mauricio Sulaiman is an admirer of Logan and Jake Paul despite criticism coming their way from the boxing fraternity.
Jake Paul fought most recently over the weekend, edging out former UFC champion Tyron Woodley via split decision.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer extended his 'record' to 4-0 in an event which was a Showtime PPV event in Cleveland.

The main event was supported by six-division world champion Amanda Serrano, former world champion Ivan Baranchyk, heavyweight prospect Daniel Dubois and Love Island's Tommy Fury.

A showdown between Paul and Fury could be next with promoter Frank Warren hinting it could take place in the UK.

Meanwhile, Logan Paul most recently fought the greatest of the modern era in Floyd Mayweather. The pair collided in an eight-round exhibition which lasted the distance meaning there was no winner declared.

It is believed to have generated over one million pay-per-view sales although it was described as a farce by hardcore boxing fans.
While crossover boxing events have always taken place, the surge of YouTubers in the ring has left the sport being accused of becoming an embarrassment.

It has also been behind the motivation of legends returning to the sport, including Mike Tyson, Roy Jones Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya who returns this month.

However, Sulaiman is a supporter of the Paul brothers and believes they are enhancing boxing's reputation rather than hindering it.
"The Pauls, the brothers, they started with amateur and they did a very good job. They trained very hard, they dedicate and take it very seriously so I respect them very much and what they have done particularly them two, is bring millions of new eyeballs to the sport," the WBC president exclusively told Planet Sport.
"They could have chosen wrestling or another sport and those fans, those followers would have been watching another sport. In this case, they watched other fights on that card so it brings new fans to the sport.
"The same as I was saying with exhibitions, there has to be extreme care for the health of the fighters who get into the ring. Many of them have never fought.

"Most of them have never got into a ring so it's not just to train and be in shape but you have to prove the ability to be able to spar a certain amount of rounds, to be at least competitive and not a really overwhelming difference in talent and weight," Sulaiman continued.

"The Paul-Mayweather (fight) was different, still a different scenario because Mayweather is legendary already, a Hall of Famer, but the difference in weight was huge, the difference in size and strength.
"But still, it was an entertaining event and there was good boxing on the card so what I take is, I try to look at the positives. The only thing is, there has to be extreme care for any event that is to take place," Sulaiman concluded.
