ESPN report claims Canelo's next fight will 'not be for boxing purists'

Canelo is regarded as boxing's biggest name but his next fight may not please boxing fans, according to Salvador Rodriguez.

Reporter Salvador Rodriguez has claimed that Canelo Alvarez is weighing up his options and his decision may not please boxing fans.

Canelo is looking at possible fights at cruiserweight, light heavyweight and super middleweight.
From Jermall Charlo to Ilunga Makabu, there are plenty of fighters to choice from for Mexico's four-division world champion.
A huge longshot is Jake Paul. The YouTuber-turned-boxer has repeatedly labelled himself as the face of boxing and called out Canelo following his recent KO win against Tyron Woodley.

Paul - who earned more money than Canelo in 2021, according to Forbes - has also been linked with an exhibition bout against heavyweight legend Mike Tyson.

Paul is currently 5-0 with other wins coming against former MMA champion Ben Askren and ex-NBA player Nate Robinson.

Options at 175

Other opponents in the frame to take on Canelo includes light heavyweight duo Artur Beterbiev and Joe Smith Jr.

Smith defended his WBO crown over the weekend with a ruthless knockout of Steve Gerrard and is open to taking on Canelo next.

When asked post-fight if he was up for taking on the Mexican in the ring Smith replied: "If Canelo wants to come and fight me, I'm ready for him.
"That's the fight I want. Everybody would love to see that fight - it would be a big deal."
Promoter Bob Arum believes Canelo will campaign at light heavyweight next and has predicted Beterbiev - the unified titlist at 175lbs - and Smith Jr are on the top of his fight list.
"I know Canelo pretty well, since he was a young man," Arum said.

"He has expressed interest to me about fighting Beterbiev or Joe Smith. I would look forward to May or September, the two dates that Canelo likes to fight, that he would fight one of those light heavyweights."

Canelo has fought at light heavyweight once with it coming against Russia's Sergey Kovalev. It ended in Canelo knocking out a weight-drained Kovalev in round 11.
